Animals inherit half of their DNA material from their dam and half from their sire. DNA profiling uses DNA sequences between genes which are inherited from the parents just like actual genes are. By comparing the pattern of these sequences in the dog to the pattern in the sequences from the probable parents, parentage verification is possible. By submitting DNA samples of ASCA registered Australian Shepherds we ensure and maintain the integrity of the registry. Such integrity is not only of great importance to ASCA but also to the breeders whose breeding program largely depends on accurate records in order to make future breeding decisions. With each submission to the database our registry grows stronger.
DNA Designations after your dogs name:
DNA-CP: DNA-Certified Profiled An ASCA registered Australian Shepherd who has been DNA profiled in an ASCA approved laboratory but one or both of whose parents have NOT been DNA-profiled at an ASCA approved laboratory.
DNA-VP: DNA-Verified Parentage An ASCA registered Australian Shepherd who has been DNA profiled with an ASCA approved laboratory and whose parents have also been DNA profiled with an ASCA approved laboratory.
*All puppies from NoBella Acres have DNA-VP parents*
Multidrug Sensitivity in Dogs:
Some Australian Shepherds are more sensitive to certain drugs and can have adverse reactions to drugs such as ivermectin and loperamide (Imodium).Drug sensitivities result from a mutation in the multi-drug resistance gene (MDR1). This gene encodes a protein, P-glycoprotein that is responsible for pumping many drugs and other toxins out of the brain. Dogs with the mutant gene cannot pump some drugs out of the brain as a normal dog would, which may result in abnormal neurologic signs. The result may be an illness requiring an extended hospital stay - or even death. At Washington State University's College of Veterinary Medicine you can get your dog tested for drug sensitivity and keep up with the latest research. At NoBella Acres all the Sires and Dams in our breeding program have been tested and are genetically clear of the MDR1 mutation with a test result of Normal/Normal.
*All puppies from NoBella Acres will be free of the MDR1 mutant gene*
